Ministers reject education funding deal on grounds the amount is too small

The minister for education said if a student at the county school got an A* student achievement score of 97, the council will be paying them Ê2,750.

But it is the council's proposed Ê1,000 for an A* student achievement score for every A student of that stage was rejected by the teachers union.

That means teachers are being paid Ê1,200 a year for two A* students, while the rest of the students are going without an equivalent.

Speaking in the Dil a few weeks ago, Mr Higgins said he would ask an independent panel of specialists to decide if the schools would be able to cope with the extra costs.

In a statement at the time he told members of the public: "Education has changed the lives of a generation and it must change again.

"My plan is to help to ensure that every child gets the opportunity of education as a matter of course.

"So far, this measure has met with limited success, yet if it succeeds I will push forward with a new school funding plan that will meet those goals."

Police arrest escapee

An escapee from a building block was arrested at the building by the police during a night-time raid after he was spotted on his phone and carrying a device.

Police raided the apartment building in the central London borough of Aldgate at 7pm on Tuesday evening, where they were arresting a man with an undisclosed identity who was on the phone.

The man was later detained at the scene and was to appear in Westminster Magistrates' Court this evening.

His identity will not be released until after he is charged, police said.

A statement on the Met's Twitter account read: "Police have confirmed there was an arrest in Aldgate on 7 October at 7.18pm.

"Officers arrested a man and a woman in the building that houses the home addresses and vehicles of four London Fire Brigade officers.

"After being detained, they were taken to an area block of property for further enquiries."

The force added in a statement on Tuesday evening: "A member of the public spotted a man with a device in a building block in Aldgate, London, and was later alerted by police.

"During a search of the building, officers saw no evidence of any crime. Officers carried out a raid on the building and are currently conducting the operation."

A police spokesman said: 'The arrest occurred whilst the arrest was ongoing with a member of the public, who is not being named, being seen on the phone and carrying the device.'

He said there was no danger to residents or security at the address.

A Met spokesman told the BBC: 'We can confirm this man has been arrested and charged by the police with possession of dangerous weapons.

'The man is believed to be a man aged in his late twenties who will appear at Westminster Magistrates' Court tomorrow morning.'
